The Bauchi State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on illegal firearms and sexual offences, arresting three suspects linked to the fabrication and possession of locally made guns in Misau, alongside a 26-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a mentally unstable woman in Gamawa Local Government Area.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued by its spokesperson, ASP Nafi’u Habibu, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu.
According to the statement, the firearms suspects were arrested on September 25, 2026, after police operatives attached to the Misau Divisional Headquarters intercepted a man carrying a locally fabricated pistol loaded with a live cartridge.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Abubakar Ahmad, also known as Tino, from Makara Huta Quarters, Misau, was intercepted around 3:00 p.m. while police personnel were on duty at Chief Magistrate Court 1, Misau.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Ahmad was attempting to hand over the firearm to 35-year-old Tijjani Yakubu, who was being remanded at a correctional centre over alleged offences bordering on criminal conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property.
During interrogation, Yakubu reportedly admitted ownership of the pistol and told investigators that he had given it to Ahmad for safekeeping.
He further identified 48-year-old Bappah Kawu, a welder from Tashar Masu area of Misau, as the person who allegedly fabricated and sold the weapon to him.
Following the disclosure, police arrested Kawu, who reportedly confessed to fabricating the pistol and selling it to Yakubu for N30,000.
A search of Kawu’s workshop also led to the recovery of two locally made Dane guns and several tools suspected to have been used in firearms fabrication, including a hacksaw, files and long iron pipes.
The three suspects remain in police custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bauchi, for further investigation.
26-year-old arrested over alleged rape in Gamawa
In a separate development, police also arrested a 26-year-old man following a report of alleged sexual assault involving a 50-year-old woman described by the police as mentally ill.
The incident was reported at the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters on September 25, 2026, by a 40-year-old man from Gauya Village in Jakusko Local Government Area of neighbouring Yobe State.
Police identified the suspect as Lukman Alhaji Nasiru, of Garin Malam Village, Gamawa.
According to the police statement, the incident allegedly occurred on September 22 at about 12:15 p.m., when Nasiru reportedly lured the woman, said to be his elder sister, to an area on the outskirts of Garin Malam before allegedly sexually assaulting her.
Following the report, police arrested the suspect and took both him and the victim to General Hospital, Gamawa, for medical examination.
The Command said investigation into the matter is ongoing.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, reiterated the Command’s stated zero-tolerance policy toward illegal firearms and sexual offences.
He also assured residents that the police would pursue the cases to their logical conclusion, while urging members of the public to provide timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing crime and protecting vulnerable persons.
