A 23-year-old man, identified as Mfon Essien, has been arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for allegedly possessing a loaded locally made shotgun in Ikot Ekpene.
Essien, a resident of Ikot Inyang Itak Village in Ikono Local Government Area, was apprehended by police operatives on Sunday, September 6, 2026, following actionable intelligence received by the Command.
According to the Police, the suspect was intercepted at about 12:30 p.m. along Ayah Road, off Uyo Road, in Ikot Ekpene, where officers conducted a search on him.
The search reportedly uncovered a locally manufactured shotgun concealed under his clothing. A live cartridge was found loaded in the firearm.
The suspect was promptly taken into custody, while the weapon and ammunition were recovered and preserved as exhibits.
Police authorities said investigators have commenced efforts to determine how Essien obtained the firearm, why he was carrying it and whether his activities are linked to other individuals or criminal groups involved in the illegal acquisition and movement of firearms.
The development was described by the Command as another significant step in its ongoing campaign against the circulation of illicit weapons and violent crime across Akwa Ibom State.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, reiterated the Command’s determination to prevent illegal firearms from reaching the streets and potentially being used to commit violent offences.
Azare said the Police would sustain intelligence-driven operations, strategic patrols and targeted interventions aimed at identifying and removing illegal weapons from circulation.
The Commissioner also appealed to residents to remain alert and promptly report suspicious movements, persons in possession of firearms and other activities capable of threatening public safety.
He assured members of the public that information supplied to the Police would be handled confidentially.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while maintaining peace and security throughout Akwa Ibom State.
The suspect remains in Police custody as investigation continues.
