The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hailed the publication by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the names of candidates for the 2027 general election, declaring that the move has put to rest widespread speculation over its ability to field a presidential candidate.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, described the publication as a major milestone in the PDP’s preparations for the 2027 polls.
According to the statement, the inclusion of the party’s presidential candidate, Senator Sandy Ojang Onor, his running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, and its National Assembly candidates on INEC’s published list underscores the party’s readiness for the forthcoming elections.
The PDP said the development had effectively silenced critics and political opponents who had repeatedly claimed the party would be unable to produce a presidential candidate due to its internal challenges.
“This publication has laid to rest months of speculation and misinformation regarding the PDP’s participation in the presidential election,” the party stated, expressing confidence in its renewed political momentum.
The opposition party also thanked its members and supporters at home and in the diaspora for remaining loyal and steadfast through what it described as one of the most difficult periods in its recent history.
It further commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the judiciary and security agencies for carrying out their constitutional responsibilities, noting that their commitment to the rule of law had reinforced public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Reaffirming its resolve to rebuild a stronger and more united party, the PDP renewed its appeal for reconciliation, extending what it described as “an open hand” to aggrieved members to close ranks ahead of the 2027 general election.
With the publication of its candidates by INEC, the PDP says it is now fully focused on consolidating its structures and presenting its vision to Nigerians as it seeks to reclaim power at the federal level in the next electoral cycle.
