Panic Debunked: Military Clears Air on ‘Blocked’ Maiduguri–Damaturu Highway

Borno State Government

Viral claims that insurgents seized control of the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway have been debunked, with security sources confirming the reports as false and misleading.

The rumour, which spread widely online, alleged that fighters linked to Islamic State West Africa Province or Boko Haram had blocked the strategic road in protest over alleged airstrikes, sparking fear among residents and commuters.

However, findings reveal that the temporary halt in movement was a controlled security measure carried out by troops of 29 Brigade in the Benisheikh axis of Borno State.

A senior military source explained that the restriction, which occurred in the early hours, was part of an ongoing operation to prevent suspected insurgents from infiltrating Benisheikh town.

Further checks showed the action formed part of wider counter-insurgency efforts in Kaga Local Government Area, following intelligence reports of possible militant movements.

Air components of Operation HADIN KAI also conducted surveillance missions across key corridors, including Auno, Maniok, Ngamdu, and Maiduguri metropolis, with no hostile activity recorded.

Officials stressed that the brief road closure was a standard tactical procedure to enable safe clearance operations and protect civilians.

They urged the public to disregard alarmist narratives, warning that such misinformation could trigger unnecessary panic and disrupt normal activities.

The Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, a vital link in the North-East, remains under constant security watch, with coordinated ground and aerial patrols ensuring the safety of travelers and communities.
