Osun Poll: Women Storm Osogbo Streets, Protest Police Intimidation, Political Violence

Borno State Government

OSOGBO — Tension mounted in Osun State on Monday as a large crowd of women took to the major streets of Osogbo, the state capital, protesting alleged police intimidation, political violence and killings ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The protesters, who marched through major parts of the city, expressed concern over what they described as a growing atmosphere of fear and insecurity surrounding the forthcoming poll.

Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the women called on security agencies and other stakeholders to protect residents and ensure that voters are allowed to exercise their franchise without intimidation or violence.

They also condemned alleged incidents of political violence and killings in the state, urging authorities to investigate reported cases and bring anyone found culpable to justice.

The protesters said the people of Osun deserved a peaceful election, stressing that political disagreements should not degenerate into attacks, threats or loss of lives.

The demonstration came just days before the governorship election, adding to growing concerns among residents and political stakeholders over security arrangements for the poll.

The women appealed to the police and other security agencies to remain professional and impartial, while urging political parties and their supporters to shun violence before, during and after the election.

They further called on the authorities to create an atmosphere where voters can freely move to polling units and cast their ballots without fear.

As the election draws closer, stakeholders in the state are expected to intensify efforts to ensure a peaceful electoral process and prevent further escalation of political tension.
