A war of words has erupted over renewed tensions in South Africa, as former Edo State governor and senator, Adams Oshiomhole, delivered a fiery response to claims that Nigerians are taking jobs from locals.
Reacting to recent hostility and reported attacks on Nigerians in the country, Oshiomhole dismissed the narrative, warning that Nigeria cannot be bullied or intimidated on the global stage.
“What black South Africans are saying—that Nigerians are taking their jobs—does not hold water,” he declared. “If that is the argument, Nigerians can return home and take over the jobs of MTN.”
The outspoken lawmaker’s reference to MTN Group—one of Africa’s largest telecom giants with deep roots in Nigeria—sparked fresh debate about economic ties between the two nations.
Oshiomhole went further, issuing a stern warning that any escalation against Nigerians could provoke a strong diplomatic and economic response.
“When we hit back, the president of South Africa will not only talk but will also go on his knees to recognize that Nigeria cannot be intimidated,” he said.
His comments come amid recurring tensions between citizens of both countries, often fueled by accusations of job competition, crime, and economic rivalry.
Nigeria and South Africa, Africa’s two largest economies, share extensive business and diplomatic relationships, but clashes at the grassroots level have periodically strained ties.
