Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his call for the United Nations to investigate the abduction and rescue of pupils and teachers in Oyo State, describing the move as “unstatemanly.”
Reacting to Makinde’s remarks, Oshiomhole argued that taking the matter to international bodies amounted to politicising a sensitive security issue.
“The governor of Oyo State calling on the United Nations to investigate the overall circumstances surrounding the kidnap, and even the rescue, of school pupils and teachers—I thought that was most unstatemanly. He has carried partisan politics too far,” Oshiomhole said.
The former governor maintained that security challenges should be addressed through Nigeria’s established institutions rather than inviting external intervention, warning that such statements could undermine public confidence in the country’s security architecture.
His comments come amid growing political debate over the handling of the school abduction, with differing views emerging on whether international scrutiny is necessary or whether domestic institutions should lead any investigation.
The exchange has added a fresh political dimension to the national conversation on insecurity, accountability and the appropriate response to high-profile kidnapping incidents.
