A major healthcare milestone has been recorded for Borno South as the bill seeking the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Kwaya Kusar has successfully passed final reading at the Nigerian Senate. The proposed legislation, sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, will now be transmitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for presidential assent.
This development marks a significant step toward the realization of what will become the first Federal Medical Centre in Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area of Borno State, a long-awaited intervention aimed at improving access to quality and specialized healthcare services for thousands of residents across the zone.
For years, residents of Kwaya Kusar and surrounding communities have endured the hardship of traveling long distances in search of medical attention. The establishment of FMC Kwaya Kusar is expected to dramatically reduce medical travel, lower related costs, and provide timely lifesaving interventions closer to home.
Beyond Kwaya Kusar, the proposed medical centre is strategically positioned to serve people from almost six Local Government Areas of Borno South, while also covering bordering catchment communities in Adamawa, Gombe, and Yobe States due to the area’s geographic advantage.
This federal initiative is designed to complement the giant strides of the Borno State Government in the health sector. While the state has made commendable investments in primary and secondary healthcare facilities, the addition of a Federal Medical Centre will introduce tertiary-level healthcare services, specialized treatment, modern equipment, and highly trained medical personnel to the region.
Senator Ndume described the effort as a response to the growing healthcare demands of the people:
“Like Oliver Twist, we must ask for more. The health needs of our people cannot be ignored. This Federal Medical Centre will ease the burden on existing hospitals and bring advanced services closer to our people.”
When established, FMC Kwaya Kusar will stand as a lasting legacy of purposeful representation and a transformative healthcare intervention for present and future generations.
