The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded a series of major breakthroughs across the country, uncovering illicit drugs concealed in imported water purifier machines and intercepting military-grade ammunition destined for Katsina State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi revealed that operatives seized three kilograms of ketamine and 199 grams of MDMA (Ecstasy) hidden inside water purifiers shipped from the Netherlands and intercepted at a Lagos courier company on May 26.
The agency also struck a major blow against drug traffickers in Kaduna, arresting a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, alongside Salomi Ezekiel, after recovering 100 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 1,246 kilograms from a residence in Gonin Gora.
In another operation, NDLEA officers on patrol along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway intercepted 30-year-old Sunusi Musa, who was allegedly transporting 380 rounds of military-grade 7.62mm ammunition to Katsina. The suspect and ammunition were subsequently handed over to the appropriate security agency for further investigation.
The anti-narcotics agency extended its crackdown to Niger State, where operatives raided a warehouse in Bosso Local Government Area and recovered 457 kilograms of skunk. A suspect, Godwin Zakka, was later arrested in connection with the seizure.
In Enugu State, officers intercepted a commercial vehicle travelling to Taraba and recovered 22,000 tablets of tramadol, 100 ampoules of pentazocine and 200 grams of bromazepam, leading to the arrest of suspect James Maigari Wisdom.
Beyond enforcement operations, the NDLEA intensified its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, taking anti-drug awareness programmes to schools, communities, workplaces and places of worship across several states.
Commending the successful operations, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised officers for the arrests and seizures, urging them to sustain the offensive against drug trafficking while expanding public sensitisation efforts nationwide.
