NBA NEC Condemns Xenophobic Attacks, Demands Protection for Nigerians in South Africa

Borno State Government

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the recent xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, describing the violence as a serious violation of human rights and African solidarity.

The resolution was adopted during the NEC meeting held on Thursday in Awka, Anambra State, amid growing concerns over reports of harassment, attacks, destruction of businesses, and threats to the lives of Nigerians living in the Republic of South Africa.

The Council said the targeting of people based on nationality was unacceptable and inconsistent with the principles of human dignity, mutual respect, and the rule of law.

NBA NEC called on the South African Government to take urgent and decisive steps to end the attacks, protect all residents within its territory, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

The Council also urged the Nigerian Government to intensify diplomatic and consular efforts to safeguard the rights, safety, and welfare of Nigerians residing in South Africa.

As part of its resolutions, NEC directed that a formal letter be sent to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling on the Federal Government to immediately implement concrete diplomatic and humanitarian measures to protect affected Nigerians and facilitate safe evacuation where necessary.

The NBA stressed that no Nigerian living abroad should be abandoned in the face of violence, intimidation, or targeted attacks, insisting that the protection of citizens remains a fundamental responsibility of every government.

The Council further reaffirmed the need for African nations to uphold peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and the protection of all persons regardless of nationality.
