In a shocking attack in the early hours of January 3, suspected members of Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), also known as Lukurawa, launched a deadly assault on a police checkpoint at Garin Natshini Gada in Argungu Local Government Area, Kebbi State.
The extremists, reportedly on motorbikes, overpowered police personnel, killing two officers, seizing two AK-47 rifles, and rustling a large number of cattle. A police patrol vehicle was abandoned at the scene.
Swift response from troops of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Argungu and Augie security teams saw clearance patrols deployed to the area, located about 10 kilometers from Argungu town. However, the attackers had already retreated, using well-known escape routes.
Local sources confirmed the extremists’ withdrawal as the military took control of the area and initiated pursuit operations. Meanwhile, the bodies of the fallen officers were transported to the morgue as efforts intensify to track down the perpetrators and recover the stolen cattle.
Security forces have assured residents of reinforced patrols and operations to restore peace in the region.
