The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan to reject the presidential ticket reportedly offered to him by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that accepting it could affect his global reputation.
The PDP faction led by Kabiru Turaki had on Saturday announced Jonathan as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, a move that has sparked fresh political debate and reactions across the country.
Reacting to the development, Keyamo said the former president, who continues to enjoy international respect for his democratic conduct and statesmanship, should be cautious about returning to the political frontline under the current circumstances.
He argued that Jonathan’s global image, built after his concession of defeat in 2015—widely praised as a milestone for democracy in Africa—should not be exposed to political controversy that could diminish his legacy.
The minister suggested that accepting the nomination could draw Jonathan into a highly contested and unpredictable political environment, potentially affecting the perception of his post-presidency record.
