The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old woman, Khadija Ibrahim, for allegedly stealing a newborn baby in Zuru Local Government Area and attempting to pass the child off as her own.

The suspect, a resident of Rikoto in Zuru LGA, was arrested following a sustained police investigation into the disappearance of the baby.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the incident occurred when Khadija allegedly approached Fatima Muhammad shortly after she gave birth and offered to assist her by fetching hot water.

But instead of returning, the suspect allegedly fled with the newborn, setting off an investigation that eventually led to her arrest.

Police sources said preliminary findings suggested that the suspect had allegedly come under emotional and social pressure over not having a child, particularly as some of her peers had already become mothers.

Investigators further alleged that Khadija had deceived her husband for about nine months into believing that she was pregnant.

The situation allegedly reached a dramatic climax after Fatima gave birth, when the suspect allegedly took the newborn and presented the baby to her husband as their own child.

Her alleged plan was uncovered after police launched an investigation into the missing newborn.

The suspect was arrested on August 14, 2026, while the baby was successfully recovered and reunited with the biological mother.

The police said Khadija remains in custody as investigations continue, adding that she would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation in accordance with the law.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Hadejia, commended the operatives for their diligence and professionalism in recovering the baby and apprehending the suspect.

He also reassured residents that the command would continue to pursue anyone found culpable of criminal offences and ensure that they face justice.

The case has sparked concern over the vulnerability of newborn babies and the need for families and communities to remain vigilant when receiving assistance from strangers or acquaintances.
