The Kebbi State House of Assembly has unanimously elected Salihu Maikasuwa Dangoje, the lawmaker representing Sakaba Constituency, as its new Speaker, bringing to an end weeks of leadership transition following the death of former Speaker Muhammad Usman Zuru.
Dangoje’s emergence comes two months after the passing of Zuru, who died on April 6, 2026, leaving a vacuum at the helm of the state legislature.
The election, conducted during plenary, witnessed lawmakers rallying behind Dangoje in a unanimous show of support, reflecting what observers described as a commitment to maintaining stability and continuity within the Assembly.
Nominating him for the top legislative position, the member representing Ngaski Constituency, Adamu Muhammad Birnin-Yauri, described Dangoje as a seasoned parliamentarian with proven integrity and extensive legislative experience.
According to Birnin-Yauri, the new Speaker has spent over a decade in the Assembly and possesses the leadership qualities required to steer the legislature effectively.
“Dangoje is a committed lawmaker who understands the workings of the Assembly and has earned the respect of his colleagues through years of dedicated service,” he said.
Moments after taking the oath of office, the new Speaker expressed gratitude to fellow lawmakers for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to lead with fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency.
He assured members that he would carry everyone along in the discharge of his responsibilities and work towards strengthening the legislative institution.
“I will justify the confidence you have placed in me and ensure that every member is given a sense of belonging as we collectively work for the progress of Kebbi State,” Dangoje said.
His emergence followed the Assembly’s zoning arrangement, which allocated the Speakership position to Kebbi South Senatorial District.
Before his elevation, Dangoje held several key positions within the Assembly, including Chairman of the House Committee on Information, where he played a prominent role in legislative affairs and public communication.
Political observers believe his vast experience and familiarity with parliamentary procedures could help ensure a smooth transition and sustain harmonious relations within the legislature.
The appointment has been welcomed by many stakeholders who see it as a step towards consolidating stability in the state’s legislative arm following the loss of the former Speaker.
With Dangoje now at the helm, attention will focus on how the Assembly advances its legislative agenda and collaborates with the executive arm to drive development across Kebbi State.
