The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a suspected food fraudster accused of adulterating, re-packaging, and selling expired powdered milk to unsuspecting consumers in Funtua Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Ibrahim Moh’d, was apprehended by operatives attached to the Makera Police Division following an intelligence-led operation that exposed what authorities described as a dangerous threat to public health.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the arrest was made on June 14, 2026, at about 11:30 a.m., when a surveillance patrol team intercepted the suspect in possession of ten bags of powdered milk believed to be expired and unfit for human consumption.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly mixed the expired milk with genuine products before re-packaging the adulterated substance into counterfeit containers designed to deceive consumers.
Police said the suspect was fully aware of the compromised and potentially harmful nature of the products but proceeded to market them as genuine goods for profit.
“The recovered products have been secured as exhibits, while the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue,” the statement said.
Authorities disclosed that the suspect would be arraigned before a competent court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The alleged offences contravene Sections 152 and 154 of the Penal Code Law 2021 (as amended), which criminalize the sale of noxious food and drinks, food adulteration, and the sale of products that do not correspond with their commercial descriptions.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, CP Ali Umar Fage, issued a stern warning to traders, wholesalers, and business owners against engaging in practices that endanger public health.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to cracking down on the circulation of substandard and harmful goods across the state, stressing that anyone found compromising consumer safety would face the full weight of the law.
The police boss also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious commercial activities to security agencies, assuring the public that the Command remains determined to protect lives and safeguard public welfare.
The arrest has drawn attention to the growing concern over counterfeit and expired food products in local markets, with many residents calling for stricter monitoring and enforcement measures to prevent hazardous goods from reaching consumers.
