A major political shake-up has hit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Katsina State as a prominent party stalwart, Alhaji Wada Maikaji, alongside several supporters, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing loss of confidence in the ruling party’s ability to address the challenges facing the people.
Maikaji, a former APC strongman in Malumfashi Local Government Area, announced his defection under the platform of the Kabir/Murja Solidarity Awareness Forum, saying the move was driven by concerns over worsening hardship, insecurity and what he described as poor governance.
Speaking during the declaration, the veteran politician said politics should be centered on public welfare, national development and the protection of lives and property.
According to him, many citizens who supported the APC during previous elections have become disappointed due to the non-fulfilment of campaign promises.
“We are worried about the failure to deliver on promises made to the people. Citizens are facing untold hardship, inadequate infrastructure, poverty, poor healthcare services and declining educational standards,” Maikaji stated.
He lamented the persistent security challenges across Katsina State, noting that communities, schools and markets continue to face threats, while residents live in fear.
“Virtually every part of Katsina State has been affected by insecurity. Communities are under pressure, schools are not safe and markets are struggling. The people deserve better attention from their leaders,” he said.
The former APC chieftain praised the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Alhaji Lado Danmarke, describing his political journey as one driven by a commitment to rescuing Katsina and restoring public confidence in governance.
Maikaji highlighted several philanthropic activities allegedly undertaken by Danmarke, including the construction of roads in rural communities, assistance to hospital patients, the provision of bursaries for tertiary institution students and the sponsorship of senior secondary school examination fees.
He urged residents of Katsina State and Nigerians at large to support the PDP in future elections, expressing confidence that the opposition party would provide purposeful leadership, improve security and promote socio-economic development.
The defection is seen by political observers as another significant development in Katsina’s political landscape, as parties continue to realign ahead of future electoral contests.
