In a decisive move to strengthen security and curb criminal activities across the country, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun Disu, has ordered the immediate seizure of vehicles operating on Nigerian roads without valid registration number plates.
The police chief said the directive forms part of ongoing efforts to tackle rising security challenges, stressing that unregistered vehicles have increasingly been exploited by criminals for kidnappings, armed robbery, banditry and other unlawful activities.
Under the new enforcement order, police commands nationwide have been directed to identify, impound and investigate vehicles found plying roads without number plates or with obscured, altered or suspicious registration details.
The IGP emphasized that proper vehicle registration remains a critical component of national security and crime prevention, noting that it enables law enforcement agencies to track vehicles and their owners when criminal incidents occur.
He urged motorists to comply with registration requirements and ensure that their vehicles display authentic number plates at all times, warning that violators would face sanctions in accordance with the law.
Security analysts have welcomed the directive, describing it as a proactive measure aimed at denying criminals the anonymity often provided by unregistered vehicles.
The nationwide crackdown is expected to complement ongoing security operations and intelligence-gathering efforts as authorities intensify measures to safeguard lives and property across Nigeria.
“No vehicle without a valid number plate should be allowed to operate on Nigerian roads,” the IGP declared, reaffirming the police commitment to restoring order and enhancing public safety.
