Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON, will on Monday, August 24, 2026, officially declare open the 2026 Yobe Spelling Bee 3.0 Competition in Damaturu, as part of his administration’s drive to promote academic excellence and nurture young talent.
The three day competition, themed “Building Champions Through Knowledge, Inspiring Excellence for a Brighter Yobe State,” will run from August 24 to 26 at the North East Development Commission, NEDC, Hall, Government Girls Unity College, Damaturu. The governor is scheduled to declare the event open at 11:00 a.m.
The Yobe Spelling Bee, launched in 2021, has grown into a statewide platform for discovering talent, strengthening literacy and inspiring academic excellence.
The second edition featured 144 young spellers 72 boys and 72 girls drawn from 72 schools across all 17 local government areas, highlighting the potential of Yobe’s children.
Dr. Mohammed Goje the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) of Yobe State.say the 3rd edition, themed “Reimagining Education in Post-Conflict States,” is more than an academic contest.
“It is a powerful statement of resilience, recovery, and renewed commitment to educational excellence,” He said. “Through this competition, we empower young learners to build literacy skills, confidence, and a shared sense of hope for sustainable peace and development.”
Commending the governor for institutionalising the initiative under the sponsorship of the Yobe State Government, organisers described the spelling bee as “an investment in confidence, knowledge and the future leadership of our state.”
The competition is designed to encourage students to develop strong language skills, broaden their vocabulary, and cultivate discipline and healthy academic rivalry.
It also underscores the state government’s broader investment in education and human capital development, particularly efforts to position Yobe students to compete favourably at national and international levels.
“I encourage parents, educators, institutions and citizens to support our young champions as we continue building an educated, resilient and prosperous Yobe,” the Dr Goje added.
The 2026 edition is expected to further strengthen the culture of academic excellence and inspire participants to pursue knowledge as a pathway to personal development and a brighter future for the state.
Highlights from the previous edition, including prize presentations and official receptions for champions, will also be featured during the event.
Organisers have wished participants, partners and stakeholders a successful Yobe Spelling Bee 3.0.
