The Gombe State Internal Revenue Service (GIRS) has unveiled plans to strengthen revenue collection, block leakages and broaden the state’s tax base as part of renewed efforts to build a more efficient and accountable tax administration system.
The commitment was reaffirmed during a high-level strategic meeting of the GIRS Board, where the agency reviewed its performance, revenue trends and operational challenges while setting fresh priorities for improved revenue mobilisation.
The meeting, chaired by the Executive Chairman of the Service, Aisha Adamu Yaro Gombe, focused extensively on measures capable of improving collection efficiency without undermining fairness, transparency and public confidence.
Board members assessed key performance indicators and ongoing reforms, identifying areas requiring stronger internal controls and more effective monitoring to ensure that revenue due to the state is properly collected and accounted for.
A major focus of the deliberations was the need to close existing revenue gaps and prevent leakages through stronger institutional processes and improved coordination across the tax administration system.
The Board also examined strategies for expanding the tax net, with emphasis on ensuring that more eligible taxpayers are captured through a fair and transparent approach.
Technology featured prominently in the discussions, as the Service explored ways of deploying digital tools to simplify tax-related processes, improve service delivery and strengthen engagement between the authority and taxpayers.
According to the Board, greater transparency in revenue administration remains critical to rebuilding public trust and encouraging voluntary compliance among taxpayers across the state.
The meeting further considered capacity development for GIRS personnel, recognising that a professional and adequately trained workforce is essential to achieving higher standards in tax administration.
Speaking during the meeting, Executive Chairman Aisha Adamu Yaro Gombe said the Service would continue to align its operations with the broader development priorities of the Gombe State Government.
She stressed that sustainable improvement in internally generated revenue was crucial to the government’s ability to finance infrastructure, public services and other development programmes.
The Chairman also acknowledged the continued support of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, Dan Majen Gombe, saying the administration’s backing had played an important role in strengthening the capacity of the revenue agency to discharge its responsibilities.
She assured that the Service would remain focused on improving its systems and adopting strategies capable of delivering stronger revenue performance while maintaining accountability.
The strategic session ended with the Board committing to accelerate measures aimed at increasing revenue collection, strengthening institutional structures and improving operational efficiency.
It also resolved to sustain efforts towards transforming GIRS into a benchmark for effective, transparent and accountable tax administration in Gombe State.
