The Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran, has highlighted what she described as a remarkable improvement in pension payments, citing the case of a retired factory worker whose monthly pension rose from ₦18,000 to ₦206,000.

Using the retiree’s experience to illustrate ongoing pension reforms, Oloworaran said the worker had received ₦18,000 every month for 21 years, but now receives ₦206,000 monthly.

“Somewhere in Nigeria, a retired factory worker checked the alert on his phone. For 21 years, that alert read ₦18,000. This month, as in every single month now, it reads ₦206,000,” she said.

According to the PenCom chief, the increase reflects efforts aimed at improving the welfare of retirees and ensuring pensioners receive more sustainable benefits after years of service.

Her remarks have renewed discussions on pension reforms, with many observers describing improved retirement benefits as a critical step toward enhancing the living standards and financial security of senior citizens across Nigeria.
