An Edo State Special Court has sentenced four persons convicted of kidnapping to death, bringing to a close their trial over multiple counts of kidnapping-related offences.
In the case involving the second defendant, Wisdom Michael, the court handed down a seven-year prison sentence on count one.
However, on counts two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and nine, the court imposed the death penalty.
Delivering the sentence, the court ordered that Michael be executed by hanging or through the administration of a lethal injection.
“You shall be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May the Lord have mercy on your soul,” the court declared.
The sentencing forms part of the Edo State Special Court’s proceedings against persons convicted of serious kidnapping offences, as authorities continue efforts to strengthen the prosecution of violent crimes in the state.
The court’s decision underscores the severe penalties attached to kidnapping under applicable Nigerian laws, particularly where the prosecution establishes the required elements of the offences beyond reasonable doubt.
