The Federal Government of Nigeria has summoned the South African High Commissioner following a fresh wave of xenophobic protests and reported attacks targeting Nigerian citizens in South Africa.
The move comes amid growing concern in Abuja over the safety of Nigerians residing in the country, as incidents of violence and intimidation reportedly spread across several affected communities.
Diplomatic sources say the summon is aimed at demanding urgent clarification from Pretoria and pressing for immediate protection of Nigerian nationals, as well as accountability for those behind the attacks.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is said to be monitoring the situation closely, with officials warning that continued hostility against Nigerians abroad could strain bilateral relations between both countries.
Nigeria and South Africa have long maintained strong economic and diplomatic ties, but periodic outbreaks of xenophobic violence in South Africa have repeatedly tested relations between Africa’s two largest economies.
Government officials in Abuja are also considering further diplomatic steps if the situation is not swiftly brought under control, including heightened engagement with regional bodies and international partners.
As tensions rise, authorities have urged calm while assuring that Nigeria will continue to prioritize the safety and dignity of its citizens wherever they reside.
