The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, has called for a more transparent and people-centred legislature, saying democracy flourishes when citizens are actively involved in the lawmaking process.
Speaking at the 2026 National Assembly Open Week, the monarch stressed that openness and public participation are essential to building trust in democratic institutions and strengthening governance.
“A legislature that is open to the people becomes stronger, more effective, and more responsive,” Bamali said.
He noted that when citizens understand how laws are made and can clearly see the work of their elected representatives, governance becomes more accountable and democracy more meaningful.
“When citizens are included in the lawmaking process, when they understand how decisions are made, and when they can see the work of their representatives clearly, democracy becomes meaningful. Public confidence grows when governance is not hidden but visible and accessible,” the Emir stated.
The traditional ruler’s remarks resonated with the theme of the 2026 NASS Open Week, which seeks to deepen transparency, accountability and public engagement in Nigeria’s legislative process.
His address underscored the growing call for greater openness in governance, with stakeholders urging lawmakers to strengthen citizen participation and reinforce public confidence in the National Assembly.
