The Nigeria Police Force in Delta State has ordered the immediate trial of two officers caught in a viral video allegedly extorting a motorist using a POS machine inside a police station.
Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi described the incident as “embarrassing and unprofessional,” stressing that such conduct is unacceptable and a betrayal of public trust.
The officers—Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim—are currently facing orderly room trial, with authorities promising to make the outcome public.
Reaffirming the stance of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the CP warned that extortion and the use of POS or any electronic payment system within police formations remain strictly prohibited.
He emphasized that no officer has the right to demand or collect money from citizens under any guise, vowing zero tolerance for abuse of office.
The Command commended members of the public for exposing the misconduct and urged continued reporting of erring officers, assuring that disciplinary actions will serve as a strong deterrent.
The development signals a renewed crackdown on police misconduct as authorities push to restore professionalism and public confidence.
