The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has tasked troops of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division and Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) to maintain sustained pressure on criminal elements while intensifying efforts to secure lasting peace across Plateau State.
Shaibu gave the directive on Monday, September 14, 2026, during an operational visit to the headquarters of 3 Division and OPEP, where he assessed the security situation, reviewed ongoing military operations and examined measures being implemented to protect vulnerable communities.
The Army chief also inspected the construction of the Nigerian Army Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) Control Station, a strategic facility designed to strengthen the military’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
When completed, the facility is expected to enhance commanders’ access to real-time intelligence and improve situational awareness, enabling faster and better-informed operational decisions.
During the visit, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of OPEP, Maj. Gen. Maxwell Dangana, briefed the COAS on security developments across the Division’s area of responsibility.
The briefing covered ongoing operations as well as engagements with relevant stakeholders aimed at preventing violence, protecting communities and consolidating the peace recorded in different parts of the state.
Shaibu commended the troops for their courage, professionalism and dedication, urging them to remain alert and disciplined in the discharge of their responsibilities.
He further stressed the importance of stronger cooperation between the military, other security agencies, traditional institutions and community leaders in tackling emerging threats and preventing a resurgence of violence.
According to the COAS, military operations alone cannot guarantee sustainable peace, noting that dialogue, reconciliation and other community-based peacebuilding initiatives must complement security efforts.
He directed troops to deal decisively with threats while ensuring that their conduct remains professional and respectful of the rights of law-abiding citizens.
The Army chief assured personnel of the continued support of the Nigerian Army, reiterating its commitment to protecting lives and property and creating a secure environment for residents to live, work and pursue their legitimate livelihoods without fear.
Shaibu also appealed to residents of Plateau State to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information on suspicious activities.
He maintained that lasting peace could only be achieved through collective responsibility involving security forces, government authorities, traditional rulers, community leaders and citizens.
The COAS’s visit comes as the military continues efforts to consolidate security gains and prevent criminal elements from exploiting vulnerable communities to destabilise Plateau State.
