Some birthdays are remembered for the wishes they attract; others reveal something deeper about the person being celebrated. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s 57th birthday was unmistakably the latter. Beyond the flood of congratulatory messages, telephone calls, and heartfelt tributes, there was a compelling statement about his political standing, leadership relationships and growing national goodwill.
From President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fellow governors, lawmakers, political leaders, communities and ordinary citizens, the celebration became more than an anniversary. It was a public affirmation of Radda’s leadership and, significantly, a strong answer to those who have persistently questioned his relationship with the Presidency.
For those of us who work closely with Governor Radda, the scale of the goodwill was heartwarming but hardly surprising. What was particularly striking was not the number of messages but their sources and substance. The Governor was inundated with calls and tributes from across political, institutional and social divides. Many went beyond the customary “happy birthday” to speak directly about his character, performance and approach to governance.
Of particular note was President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s message. The President described Radda as a “committed progressive,” a seasoned economist and a grassroots administrator whose public service continues to inspire young Nigerians. He further acknowledged the Governor’s courage, focus and empathy in confronting some of Katsina State’s most pressing challenges, particularly security and education.
Even more significant was the President’s recognition of Radda’s governance model. He specifically commended the decision to take budget consultations to all 361 wards of Katsina State, allowing communities to identify their priority projects. President Tinubu also acknowledged Radda’s investments in security, education and agriculture and declared that these interventions align with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
These were not casual words inserted into a routine birthday message. They represented an unequivocal presidential acknowledgement of Governor Radda’s leadership and development direction. For anyone willing to separate facts from political conjecture, the message was clear.
For some time, certain political voices have attempted to create the impression that Governor Radda neither enjoys the listening ear nor commands the attention and support of President Tinubu. The facts have consistently disproved that narrative, and the events surrounding Radda’s 57th birthday made it even more difficult to sustain.
Indeed, the relationship between the two leaders did not begin with a birthday message. President Tinubu had already demonstrated his regard for the Radda administration through his visit to Katsina State, where he commissioned landmark projects, including the multimillion-naira Katsina Agricultural Mechanisation Centre and the 24-kilometre Eastern Bypass,
The President also spent two nights in Katsina during that visit. Such presidential presence cannot reasonably be dismissed as political happenstance. It reflected the importance attached to Katsina, the projects being delivered by the Radda administration and the working relationship between both leaders.
The birthday tribute from the President therefore reinforced an established reality rather than creating a new one. Those who have repeatedly tried to manufacture a political gulf between Abuja and Katsina are entitled to their permutations, but they are not entitled to their own facts. The evidence is in plain sight.
In political terms, Radda is Tinubu and Tinubu is Radda. Both belong to the same progressive family and are tied to the responsibility of delivering development through the mandates entrusted to them. Any attempt to manufacture a political separation between them is an exercise in futility. Political speculation may travel quickly, but facts eventually catch up with it.
Still, the significance of Radda’s 57th birthday extended far beyond the Presidency. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum joined in celebrating him, describing his leadership in terms of dedication and commitment to the progress of Katsina State and Nigeria. Fellow governors, including those of Ogun and Zamfara states, also sent their felicitations, while members of the National Assembly and other national figures reached out to celebrate with him.
At home, the messages carried an equally important weight. Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe described Radda as an inclusive leader with listening ears. As someone who works with the Governor at the centre of the administration, Jobe’s assessment offered a direct insight into the leadership culture within Government House.
The Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahaya Daura, similarly punched the cordial relationship between the executive and legislature under Radda. That relationship has provided the institutional cooperation required to translate policies into programmes while allowing both arms of government to discharge their constitutional responsibilities.
The celebration had, in fact, begun before the birthday. During the 15th meeting of the Katsina State Executive Council, members used the Any Other Business session to felicitate with the Governor ahead of his anniversary. The motion, moved by Hon. Dr. Faisal Kaita, reflected the warmth and camaraderie within the administration.
One of the most symbolic moments, however, came with the visit of members of the Yoruba community to Governor Radda. In a country where diversity can either become a fault line or a source of strength, such a gesture carries meaning beyond birthday courtesy. It demonstrated a sense of belonging among people whose ancestral roots may lie elsewhere but who live, work and contribute to the prosperity of Katsina State.
None of this suggests that Governor Radda should be insulated from criticism. Democracy demands scrutiny, and responsible criticism can strengthen governance. But there is a difference between criticism founded on facts and political narratives constructed to achieve predetermined conclusions. When claims are repeatedly contradicted by visible evidence, continuing to promote them does not make them true.
This is why the goodwill that accompanied Radda’s 57th birthday matters. It came from the Presidency, fellow governors, legislators, political leaders, members of his administration, communities and citizens. Taken individually, each message was a birthday felicitation. Taken together, they painted a broader portrait of political acceptance, institutional respect and relationships cultivated through years of public service.
At 57, Radda received many birthday wishes, but what Nigeria witnessed was something more consequential: an unmistakable affirmation of leadership and goodwill that went far beyond the birthday itself.
