A burial ceremony in Sokoto State turned dramatic on Monday after a suspected phone thief was apprehended at the Kurhi Cemetery while mourners were paying their final respects to the deceased.
The suspect was reportedly among those accompanying the remains to the cemetery when he allegedly stole a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold phone from the pocket of a mourner.
However, his alleged act did not go unnoticed.
The owner reportedly discovered that the phone was missing shortly after the theft, prompting an alarm among mourners. The suspect was said to have attempted to flee but was pursued by some of those present.
His escape bid was eventually foiled as the crowd reportedly caught up with him at the cemetery gate.
The incident has sparked outrage among members of the community, with many expressing disbelief that anyone could allegedly exploit a solemn burial ceremony to steal from grieving mourners.
The suspect was subsequently apprehended, while efforts were reportedly underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft.
The incident has renewed concerns over opportunistic theft at crowded public gatherings, where criminals can sometimes take advantage of distractions to target unsuspecting people.
For mourners who had gathered to bid farewell to their loved one, what should have been a solemn moment of grief was briefly overshadowed by the shocking alleged act of theft.
A burial ground turned into a scene of pursuit — and the suspected phone thief was stopped before he could make his escape.
