Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved a major salary review for academic and non-academic staff of two state-owned universities, with the new package expected to cost the government ₦4.7 billion annually.
The affected institutions are Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil, and Northwest University, Kano.
The approval aligns the remuneration of workers in the two institutions with the new salary structure recently implemented by the Federal Government for staff of federal universities across the country.
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the decision followed the recommendations of a committee constituted by the Kano State Executive Council to examine requests from the two universities for the adoption of the new federal remuneration package.
Under the approved arrangement, the revised salary structure will take effect retrospectively from January 2026, while actual payment is scheduled to commence in September 2026.
The new salary package carries a combined monthly financial commitment of ₦391,847,555.24, translating to ₦4,702,170,662.88 annually for the two universities.
The committee said the review was necessary to promote industrial harmony, improve staff welfare and ensure that workers in the state-owned institutions are not left behind following the implementation of the new remuneration package in federal universities and other state-owned universities.
The development is expected to boost morale among academic and non-academic workers while strengthening the capacity of the institutions to attract and retain qualified personnel.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, describing investment in human capital as a key component of his administration’s agenda for the development of the state.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening the quality of higher education in Kano, noting that improved staff welfare remains critical to creating an effective and productive academic environment.
With the approval, workers of the two universities are set to benefit from a salary structure that brings their remuneration closer to that of their counterparts in federal universities, in a move the state government says will further enhance stability and productivity across the institutions.
