By: ABC News Nigeria
Fear and uncertainty have gripped parts of Zamfara State following a reported bandit ambush on a bus conveying police officers along the Sokoto–Gusau highway, with several officers feared killed and others reportedly whisked away by the attackers.
The shocking incident occurred on Monday when the officers were travelling in a Zamfara State mass transit vehicle, popularly known as Bazamfara, heading towards Gusau, the state capital.
Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that the bandits launched a sudden attack on the vehicle, leaving some of the police personnel dead in what has been described as a deadly ambush.
More disturbing accounts indicated that some surviving officers were reportedly abducted by the gunmen, who allegedly took them to an undisclosed location.
However, the exact number of officers killed or kidnapped remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing, but sources within the police force revealed that the officers were heading to Kaura Namoda Local Government Area to provide security for the ongoing APC primary election for the Zamfara North Senatorial District.
The reported attack has added a fresh layer of concern to security challenges in the state, particularly with the apparent targeting of security personnel travelling along a major highway.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Zamfara State Police Command proved unsuccessful, as calls placed to the telephone of its Public Relations Officer were not answered.
The identities of the affected officers, the number of casualties and the whereabouts of those reportedly abducted remain unknown.
As the situation develops, attention is now focused on the police authorities for an official account of the attack and possible rescue efforts for officers reportedly taken hostage.
