Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has made an emotional appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to ensure that her husband is granted fair and affordable bail in line with his constitutional rights.
Speaking publicly on Tuesday, Asiya recalled her family’s support for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential campaign, saying she personally canvassed votes across Kaduna State while her husband stood firmly behind the President’s ambition.
She appealed to Tinubu to intervene by ensuring that El-Rufai enjoys the fundamental rights guaranteed under Nigeria’s Constitution, stressing that her request was not for the President to halt the ongoing prosecution.
“I am not asking you to tell them not to prosecute him,” she said. “We are asking you to allow him the basic human rights that the Constitution you swore to uphold and defend guarantees.”
Asiya urged the authorities to grant the former governor bail on terms he can reasonably meet, insisting that the courts should be allowed to determine his guilt or innocence.
“The ball is in your court, Mr. President,” she said, expressing confidence that Tinubu, as “a father,” would empathise with the family’s plea.
Her remarks come amid the ongoing legal proceedings involving the former Kaduna State governor, with the family maintaining that due process and constitutional safeguards should be respected throughout the trial.
