Uyo, August 14, 2026 — Motorists, commercial drivers, motorcyclists and tricycle operators in Akwa Ibom State have been put on notice as the Police Command intensifies its statewide crackdown on traffic violations.
The Command said the sustained enforcement is aimed at restoring sanity on the state’s roads, reducing avoidable crashes, protecting lives and property, and ensuring the smooth movement of people and vehicles.
The warning, contained in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, on behalf of Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, comes as Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, traffic officers and other operational units have been directed to step up enforcement across their jurisdictions.
Among the offences attracting particular attention are one-way driving, reckless and dangerous driving, speeding, driving without valid documents, the use of concealed or unauthorised number plates, and operating unregistered vehicles, motorcycles or tricycles.
The Police also warned against indiscriminate parking, overloading, using motorcycles and tricycles on restricted routes, disobeying traffic lights and road signs, and using mobile phones while driving.
The Command declared that “ignorance of the law will not be accepted as an excuse,” urging road users to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that all required documents remain valid before taking to the roads.
Parents and guardians were equally warned against allowing underage or unqualified persons to operate vehicles, motorcycles or tricycles on public roads.
However, the Police Command said the enforcement would not be a licence for misconduct by its personnel. Officers deployed for the exercise have been instructed to remain professional, civil and respectful in their dealings with members of the public.
“Extortion, harassment, unnecessary delay or any other form of unprofessional conduct will not be tolerated,” the Command stressed.
CP Azare said the exercise was not designed to inconvenience residents but to save lives, prevent road crashes and promote discipline and safety across Akwa Ibom.
The Command consequently urged motorists and other road users to cooperate with police officers and authorised traffic personnel, warning that anyone caught violating traffic regulations would face the law.
The Police also appealed to residents to treat road safety as a collective responsibility, saying safer roads require the cooperation of both law enforcement agencies and the public.
