Hundreds of angry residents on Friday staged a protest at the busy Karu Bridge in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), demanding urgent action from security agencies to rescue abducted children and teachers and tackle rising insecurity in the area.
The demonstrators, who gathered in large numbers early in the day, blocked the major road linking Karu to Asokoro, causing a severe traffic gridlock and leaving commuters stranded for hours.
Carrying placards with various inscriptions, the protesters expressed frustration over the growing wave of kidnappings and violent attacks, insisting that authorities must act swiftly to secure the release of those still in captivity.
Many of the protesters said the abduction of children and teachers had heightened fear among residents, forcing families to live in constant anxiety. They called on the Federal Government, security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify rescue efforts and strengthen security across vulnerable communities.
Witnesses said traffic movement along the Karu-Asokoro corridor was completely disrupted as protesters occupied the highway, chanting solidarity songs and demanding justice for victims of kidnapping.
The protesters vowed to sustain pressure on the authorities until concrete steps are taken to rescue the abducted victims and address the worsening security situation.
As of the time of filing this report, security personnel had been deployed to the area to maintain order, while efforts were ongoing to ease the traffic congestion caused by the demonstration.
The protest highlights growing public concern over insecurity in parts of the FCT and surrounding communities, with residents urging government at all levels to take decisive measures to protect lives and property.
