Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims about the electoral strength of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains firmly positioned to secure the required votes across the North in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the declaration during a press conference, where he took a swipe at Atiku’s chances in several parts of the South.
According to the minister, while there is no state in the North where President Tinubu would fail to meet the constitutional threshold of 25 per cent of votes, Atiku could struggle to secure even 10 per cent in some Southern states.
“There is nowhere in the North that the President will not make 25 per cent. There are so many places in the South Atiku won’t have 10 per cent,” Wike said.
The former Rivers State governor argued that the 2027 contest would not be determined merely by political calculations or public declarations, but by the actual support each candidate commands across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
His comments come amid growing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with opposition parties and political figures intensifying efforts to build alliances and consolidate support across the country.
Wike, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who has maintained a working relationship with the Tinubu administration despite remaining a PDP member, has repeatedly stirred political debate with his outspoken comments on the opposition and the 2027 race.
The minister’s latest remarks are likely to fuel further debate over the emerging political battle between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition forces ahead of the election.
