Security forces in Zamfara State have rescued two abducted victims and recovered an AK-47 rifle following a fierce encounter with armed bandits in Talata Mafara Local Government Area.
The operation, which took place on Monday, August 24, 2026, also resulted in the neutralisation of one suspected bandit, according to the Zamfara State Police Command.
The joint operation involved Police Tactical Operatives, members of the Community Protection Guard (CPG) and Civilian JTF. The team was carrying out a rescue mission around Tashar Lawali Village in Kagara District when they reportedly encountered a group of bandits.
The criminals, who were riding on five motorcycles and moving with some of their captives, opened fire after sighting the approaching security personnel.
The operatives responded immediately, engaging the attackers and forcing them to retreat into the surrounding area.
During the gun battle, one of the suspected bandits was neutralised. Security personnel also recovered an AK-47 rifle and its magazine from the scene.
Two abducted victims were successfully rescued during the operation, while the fleeing members of the gang reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries.
The police said none of the security personnel involved in the operation was injured or killed.
The operation has continued, with security teams intensifying efforts to locate the fleeing suspects, rescue any remaining captives and recover additional weapons.
The Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, CP A.M. Bello, PSC+, MNIPS, praised the personnel and other security partners involved in the operation for their bravery and swift response.
He said the command would continue to rely on intelligence-led and coordinated operations to disrupt criminal networks and strengthen security across Zamfara State.
The Commissioner also reassured residents that the police and other security agencies remain committed to restoring lasting peace and protecting communities from banditry and other criminal activities.
