The Media and Disability Care Initiative (MDCI), in partnership with key government agencies and civil society organizations, has intensified efforts to combat drug abuse, gender-based violence (GBV), and domestic violence through a roundtable discussion and public awareness campaign in Yobe State.
The initiative, held in collaboration with the Yobe State Committee on Drug Abuse Control, the State Drug Abuse Control Focal Office, the Yobe State Drugs and Medical Consumables Management Agency (YODMA), and several non-governmental organizations, brought together stakeholders to chart a united response to the growing social challenges.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Yobe State Committee on Drug Abuse Control, Barr. Sale Samanja, described substance abuse as a major driver of crime, domestic violence, and other social vices, stressing that no single institution could tackle the problem alone.
He urged government agencies, the media, civil society groups, traditional institutions, and community leaders to strengthen collaboration in prevention, public education, rehabilitation, and advocacy to curb the menace.
Also addressing participants, Hon. Saidu Jakusko, Focal Person on Drug Abuse Control and representative of YODMA, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to reducing drug demand through sustained awareness campaigns, grassroots engagement, and strategic partnerships.
He appealed to young people to stay away from illicit drugs while encouraging parents and guardians to take proactive roles in identifying early signs of substance abuse and supporting preventive measures within their families.
Participants at the roundtable underscored the media’s vital role in promoting accurate information, shaping public opinion, and driving positive behavioural change through responsible reporting and sustained advocacy.
They also called for stronger support systems for survivors of gender-based and domestic violence, advocating community-based interventions that would protect vulnerable groups, particularly persons with disabilities.
The campaign attracted representatives from government agencies, media organisations, disability rights groups, civil society organisations, development partners, and other stakeholders committed to promoting safer, healthier, and more inclusive communities across Yobe State.
