The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State, Muhammad Gadaka, has withdrawn his earlier controversial comment suggesting that women whose husbands stop them from voting for the party should end their marriages.
Gadaka, who had also jokingly offered to marry such women, apologised to members of the public, saying the statement was not intended to be taken literally.
“I withdraw my earlier statement that any woman whose husband prevents her from voting for the APC should end her marriage and that I would marry her,” Gadaka said.
He explained that the comment was made in jest and appealed to the public to disregard it.
“I apologise to the public; I only said it as a joke,” the Yobe APC chairman added.
The clarification came after the remark generated public attention, with concerns raised over the appropriateness of linking marital relationships to political choices.
Gadaka’s retraction is expected to put the controversy to rest as political parties intensify mobilisation and engagement with voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
