As the countdown to the 2027 general elections gradually gathers momentum, political conversations in Borno State are beginning to shift from governance to succession. While such discourse is natural in any democratic setting, the peculiar circumstances of Borno State demand a more deliberate and strategic approach one anchored on consolidation, continuity, and sustained progress.
It is within this context that the argument for Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to play a decisive role in the emergence of his successor becomes both timely and compelling.
Borno State has, over the past decade, faced unprecedented challenges arising from insurgency, displacement, and economic disruption.
The emergence of Professor Babagana Umara Zulum as governor in 2019 was not accidental; rather, it was the product of a carefully managed political transition rooted in consultation, party cohesion, and a shared vision for recovery and development.
Zulum’s rise to power followed a well-structured process championed by his predecessor, Senator Kashim Shettima, who prioritized competence, integrity, and commitment to public service over mere political expediency. That process ensured that leadership was handed over to an individual with a proven track record, administrative experience, and deep understanding of the state’s challenges.
The result has been evident in Zulum’s hands-on governance style, infrastructural development, educational reforms, and relentless pursuit of peace and resettlement of displaced communities.
Today, Borno stands at a critical juncture. The gains recorded under Zulum’s administration though significant remain fragile and require careful nurturing. Abrupt political transitions or the emergence of leadership disconnected from the current development blueprint could reverse these achievements. This is why continuity is not just desirable; it is essential.
For continuity to be meaningful, it must be guided. Governor Zulum, as the chief architect of the state’s ongoing transformation, is best positioned to identify and support a successor who understands the vision, shares the commitment, and possesses the capacity to sustain the momentum. This is not about imposing a candidate but about safeguarding the collective progress of the people of Borno State.
The same transparent and consultative process that produced Zulum should be replicated. Stakeholders including party leaders, elders, technocrats, and community representatives must be engaged in identifying credible individuals with the competence and character required to lead. Such a process will not only strengthen internal democracy within the ruling party but also foster unity and minimize post-election tensions.
Furthermore, governance in Borno State requires more than political popularity; it demands resilience, empathy, and administrative expertise. The next governor must be someone who has been part of the system, understands its intricacies, and is willing to build upon existing policies rather than dismantle them for personal or political reasons.
Governor Zulum’s endorsement, therefore, should be seen as a guiding influence rather than a dictatorial imposition. His experience, achievements, and understanding of the state’s developmental trajectory place him in a unique position to recommend a successor who can consolidate on the gains made so far.
History has shown that where succession planning is neglected, progress is often disrupted. Borno State cannot afford such a setback, especially at a time when stability and development are gradually taking root after years of turmoil.
As 2027 approaches, the people of Borno State must prioritize continuity over uncertainty, consolidation over experimentation, and vision over ambition.
Governor Zulum’s involvement in shaping the next leadership should, therefore, be viewed as a strategic necessity aimed at preserving the future of the state.
In the end, leadership is not only about the present but also about securing the future. Governor Zulum has the opportunity and indeed the responsibility to ensure that the foundation he has laid is not only sustained but strengthened for generations to come.
