The Akwa Ibom State Police Command disclosed that the incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, when some youths reportedly attempted to apprehend the suspect, whom the Police identified as an alleged leader of a criminal gang terrorising the community.
According to the Police, the suspect allegedly pulled out a locally made pistol and opened fire on the youths during the encounter. However, the residents reportedly overpowered him, leaving him with head injuries.
He was subsequently rushed to a hospital for medical attention but was confirmed dead. His remains have been deposited in a morgue for preservation and further necessary procedures.
The Police said a locally made pistol, one live cartridge and one expended cartridge were recovered from the suspect following the confrontation.
Preliminary investigations, according to the Command, identified Mkpowo as one of the wanted criminal suspects who had been under sustained security surveillance over alleged involvement in armed robbery and other criminal activities in the area.
The latest development comes amid intensified police operations against the suspected criminal gang, which recently resulted in the invasion and destruction of its identified hideout, where four firearms were recovered.
The Command said the successive operations formed part of its efforts to dismantle criminal networks, recover illegal weapons and strengthen security across affected communities.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, commended residents for their cooperation and willingness to provide credible information to security agencies.
However, he cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands or engaging suspected criminals in violent confrontations, particularly where firearms are involved.
Azare urged residents to report suspected offenders to the Police and allow security agencies to handle investigations and prosecution in accordance with the law.
He also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and criminal activities to the nearest police station or through established security channels.
The Police reiterated their commitment to sustaining operations against criminal elements and ensuring the safety of residents across Akwa Ibom State.
