The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with a series of alleged machete attacks and robberies targeting women in Uyo, recovering a machete, stolen mobile phones and other items during the investigation.
The arrests followed public reports and information circulated on social media about alleged attacks on women in parts of the state capital.
The police identified the principal suspect as 27-year-old Wisdom Effiong, a native of Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State who resides in Ikot Okubo Village, Uyo Local Government Area.
According to the Command, a second suspect, identified as Yakub Abdullah, was also arrested over allegations that he received some of the items reportedly stolen during the attacks.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the recovered items were allegedly handed over to Abdullah by Effiong, although the police said investigations were still ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incidents.
Items recovered by the police include a machete, a woman’s handbag, a Tecno POP 5 Android phone, an iPhone 11, a Remi Android phone and three power banks.
Seven Women Identify Suspect
In a significant development in the investigation, the police disclosed that seven women had so far identified Effiong as the person who allegedly attacked and robbed them.
The Command said it was continuing investigations to determine the full extent of the suspects’ alleged involvement, identify additional victims and establish whether other persons were connected to the incidents.
The police have consequently appealed to residents who may have suffered similar attacks or robberies to come forward and assist investigators.
Victims have been advised to report to the Police Public Relations Unit at the Akwa Ibom State Police Command or visit the nearest police station to provide information that could help strengthen the investigation.
The appeal is aimed at helping investigators establish the number of victims and gather further evidence relating to the alleged crimes.

The police confirmed that both suspects remained in custody and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, expressed appreciation to members of the public whose information assisted in the arrest of the suspects.
