A high-powered delegation from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has visited Maiduguri to deepen counterterrorism cooperation with Nigeria’s military in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the North-East and Lake Chad region.
The delegation, led by Rear Admiral Cameron Chen, Deputy Director of Operations/Cyber at AFRICOM, arrived at the Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai at Maimalari Cantonment on May 20.
They were received by the Deputy Theatre Commander, Air Vice Marshal O.F. Akinboyewa, during a strategic engagement focused on strengthening joint efforts against terrorist groups operating across the region.
During the visit, military officials presented detailed briefings on the current security situation in the North-East, ongoing counter-insurgency operations, and emerging threats within the Lake Chad Basin.
Top discussions centered on intelligence sharing, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) support, logistics interdiction, and enhanced operational coordination among regional security forces.
The AFRICOM delegation also reviewed multinational efforts aimed at crippling terrorist networks and disrupting their supply chains across affected areas.
Security sources disclosed that both Nigeria and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to sustained military cooperation under existing counterterrorism frameworks, including preparations for the upcoming Operation Lake Sanity III.
The visit was described as successful and incident-free, further underscoring the growing international collaboration in maintaining pressure on terrorist groups in the North-East.
