Fear and uncertainty gripped livestock traders in Kano State after gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked merchants transporting rams for the upcoming Eid al-Adha market season and made away with 11 animals.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday night in Dakatsalle village, Bebeji Local Government Area, as the traders from Ajingi LGA waited for transportation to Ankpa in Kogi State.
One of the victims, Alhaji Hamisu Abdu Sakalawa, told local media that the attackers stormed the area in a vehicle, fired gunshots into the air and ordered the traders to lie face down and cover their eyes before fleeing with the rams.
The victims later reported the attack at the Dakatsalle Police Outpost, while concerns continue to grow over rising insecurity along major highways across the country.
The attack has sparked fresh worries among traders and commuters ahead of the Eid al-Adha celebrations, with many questioning the safety of Nigeria’s roads as criminal gangs increasingly target businesses and travelers transporting goods between states.
Residents and stakeholders have called for stronger security patrols on highways and rural transit routes to prevent further attacks on innocent citizens and protect economic activities linked to the festive season.
