Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully repelled a midnight attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists along the Geidam–Maine Soro road in Yobe State, forcing the insurgents to retreat after a fierce gun battle.
Security sources disclosed that the attack occurred at about 2:04 a.m. on Thursday while troops of the 159 Task Force Battalion were conducting a routine night standby patrol in Geidam Local Government Area.
The terrorists reportedly launched a surprise assault on the patrol team, triggering an intense exchange of gunfire. However, the soldiers stood their ground and engaged the attackers until reinforcement troops arrived at the scene.
According to the sources, the arrival of additional troops turned the tide of the battle, compelling the insurgents to flee in disarray and abandon their offensive.
One soldier sustained injuries during the encounter and was promptly evacuated for medical attention. He is currently receiving treatment at the battalion’s Regimental Aid Post (RAP) and is said to be in stable condition while awaiting further medical management.
The sources revealed that a PKT machine gun and a Baofeng handheld radio were lost during the clash.
Military authorities have since intensified search and tracking operations in the area to recover the missing equipment and apprehend the fleeing terrorists.
The latest encounter underscores the continued efforts of security forces to deny insurgents freedom of movement and sustain pressure on terrorist groups operating in the North-East.
