Panic gripped Lassa Community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State on Monday after suspected ISWAP terrorists stormed a secondary school where students were writing the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination, abducting candidates and teachers before fleeing into nearby bushes.
However, in a swift response, troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) successfully rescued 10 of the abducted victims, offering hope to families and the community.
Security sources disclosed that the terrorists invaded the Technical Secondary School, Lassa, at about 9:00 a.m., disrupting the ongoing examination and whisking away an unspecified number of students and teachers.
The attack threw the school into confusion as candidates preparing for one of the country’s most important examinations fled for safety while teachers and residents raised the alarm.
Following a distress call, troops launched a coordinated pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, combing surrounding forests and escape routes.
The operation led to the rescue of 10 abducted NECO candidates and teachers, while efforts have continued to track down the remaining victims and apprehend the attackers.
The latest incident highlights the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in parts of Borno State despite sustained military offensives aimed at restoring peace to the North-East.
Security authorities have assured residents that military operations have been intensified in the area to prevent further attacks, secure schools and protect students sitting for national examinations.
The attack has again raised concerns over the safety of schools in conflict-prone communities, with residents calling for stronger security around examination centres to ensure that students can pursue their education without fear.
Military authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident, while investigations and rescue operations remain ongoing.
