Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI, have successfully repelled a daring cross-border attack by suspected ISWAP/Boko Haram fighters, neutralising 12 terrorists during a fierce late-night gun battle in the Kirawa axis of Borno State.
The confrontation, which occurred around 11:00 p.m. on May 22, unfolded during the ongoing Operation Desert Sanity V and Siege Operations, as terrorists reportedly attempted to infiltrate a military position from the Cameroon border corridor.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that vigilant troops detected the insurgents advancing toward their location and immediately engaged them with overwhelming firepower, forcing the attackers into a chaotic retreat across the border.
Sources disclosed that several fleeing terrorists escaped with gunshot wounds as troops intensified the assault with the support of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, coordinated air strikes, and allied operational support.
Preliminary battle damage assessment revealed that no fewer than 12 terrorists were eliminated during the encounter, while one gallant soldier sustained injuries in action.
Recovered items from the terrorists included AK-47 rifles, RPG components, ammunition, and assorted combat materials, while troops recorded no equipment losses.
Military authorities confirmed that exploitation operations are ongoing in the area to track fleeing insurgents and prevent any regrouping attempts.
Although calm has returned to the axis, security sources warned that the environment remains volatile, stressing the need for sustained military pressure and heightened vigilance across the North-East theatre.
Operation HADIN KAI reiterated its determination to deny terrorists freedom of movement and restore lasting peace and stability in the region.
