Troops of the 176 Guards Battalion have arrested a suspected spy found loitering around a highly restricted area near the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Security sources disclosed that the suspect was apprehended at about 4:30 p.m. on May 9, 2026, during a routine foot patrol by troops deployed to secure the sensitive facility.
According to the sources, soldiers on patrol became suspicious after noticing the individual moving around the restricted zone under unclear circumstances.
The suspect was immediately intercepted and subjected to a search by the troops.
Items reportedly recovered from him include a wallet containing two ATM cards, transaction receipts, and several passport photographs.
Military authorities said the suspect is currently being held in custody for further interrogation and profiling to determine the motive behind his presence near the secured presidential area of the airport.
Security officials have yet to disclose the identity of the suspect or whether he has any connection to criminal or espionage-related activities.
The Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is regarded as one of the country’s most sensitive security zones due to its use by the President, top government officials, and foreign dignitaries.
The arrest comes amid heightened security surveillance around strategic national assets and government facilities across the Federal Capital Territory following growing concerns over espionage, sabotage, and security threats.
Military sources said troops have intensified patrols, intelligence gathering, and monitoring operations around critical infrastructure to prevent security breaches and suspicious activities.
Authorities noted that investigations are ongoing to establish whether the suspect acted alone or as part of a wider network.
