The recent overseas trip by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has come under fire, with a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Landan Salifu, describing the journey as poorly timed and accusing the President of losing touch with the economic realities confronting Nigerians.
Salifu said Tinubu should not have travelled abroad at a time when citizens are grappling with rising living costs, declining purchasing power and worsening economic pressures.
Speaking on the President’s trip, the ADC chieftain argued that Tinubu ought to have remained in Abuja to tackle pressing domestic challenges rather than leaving the country.
“The trip was ill-timed,” Salifu said, insisting that the President should return from the journey with a sober assessment of his administration’s performance and consider resigning.
According to him, the economic hardship is being felt across different social classes, particularly among low-income earners and the shrinking middle class.
He said even relatively wealthy Nigerians were not insulated from the economic difficulties, arguing that the administration had failed to deliver meaningful relief to citizens.
Salifu also pointed to the latest increase in petrol pump prices, noting that the price of petrol reportedly rose from about ₦1,200 to ₦1,310 per litre around the time the President departed the country.
He questioned the timing of the President’s foreign engagements, saying the priority should be addressing issues directly affecting Nigerians at home.
The ADC chieftain further alleged that the President’s decision to travel at this period suggested a greater focus on political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections than on the immediate welfare of Nigerians.
“This is the time when the President should be in Abuja addressing issues important to Nigerians, not stepping out to recharge for the 2027 election,” he said.
Salifu accused the administration of prioritising political power over the wellbeing of citizens, urging Nigerians to scrutinise the government’s record as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
He maintained that the growing economic hardship required urgent attention and decisive action from the Federal Government rather than political manoeuvring.
The ADC chieftain’s remarks add to the growing criticism of the Tinubu administration over economic conditions, particularly fuel prices and the rising cost of living.
