President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming and revitalisation of the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, in honour of the late military officer and pro-democracy icon.

The President said the decision was taken in recognition of General Yar’Adua’s immense contributions to the growth of modern democratic Nigeria and his enduring legacy of national service.

The move is expected to transform the institution into a specialised centre of excellence for geological sciences, engineering technology and related fields, while preserving the memory of one of Nigeria’s most influential statesmen.

General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s political evolution and became a leading figure in the struggle for democratic governance before his death in 1997.

Observers describe the renaming as a fitting tribute to a national hero whose commitment to democracy, unity and good governance continues to inspire generations of Nigerians.

The revitalised university is expected to strengthen research, innovation and manpower development in the nation’s energy, mining and engineering sectors, while serving as a lasting monument to Yar’Adua’s contributions to nation-building.
