In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a hefty N15 billion take-off grant.
The development, announced on Monday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, signals a major expansion of the nation’s premier police training institution, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to boost manpower and professionalism within the force.
N15bn Injection for Rapid Take-Off
According to the statement, the N15 billion intervention—sourced from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund)—will fund critical infrastructure, including academic complexes, student hostels, and essential training facilities.
The new campus is expected to complement the existing academy in Wudil, Kano State, in line with the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which permits the creation of multiple campuses nationwide.
Strategic Siting in Ogun
Erinja emerged as the preferred location following a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, top officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Sources indicate that the decision was guided by factors such as student intake capacity, funding sustainability, academic quality assurance, and the urgent need to scale up recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force.
Boost for Security, Training Capacity
With the Nigerian Police undergoing renewed recruitment drives, the additional campus is expected to significantly expand training capacity and enhance the quality of officer education.
The initiative underscores President Tinubu’s broader agenda to modernize law enforcement institutions and address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges through improved training, infrastructure, and institutional support.
As groundwork begins in Ogun State, stakeholders say the new academy campus could become a game-changer in shaping the next generation of police officers in Nigeria.
