Katsina State is set to take center stage in Nigeria’s climate action drive as Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has expressed readiness to host the Renewed Hope Climate Change Awareness Tour (REHCCAT), a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and green growth.
The programme, scheduled for July 2026, is designed to take climate change awareness beyond policy circles and conference halls to the grassroots, engaging farmers, traders, students, women, youths, and local communities on the realities of climate change and practical adaptation measures.
Governor Radda described climate change as a critical challenge, particularly for Katsina State where agriculture remains the mainstay of the economy and the livelihood of millions of residents.
He reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to initiatives that promote environmental protection, sustainable agricultural practices, afforestation, and community participation in addressing climate-related challenges.
The governor noted that strengthening climate awareness at the community level is essential to protecting livelihoods, boosting food security, and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
Speaking on preparations for the event, the Katsina State Focal Person for REHCCAT, Hon. Suleiman Ribadu, disclosed that a major town hall meeting will form a key highlight of the programme.
According to him, the gathering will bring together government officials, development partners, traditional rulers, farmers, women groups, youth organisations, and other stakeholders to deliberate on practical solutions to climate challenges confronting local communities.
Ribadu commended Governor Radda for embracing the initiative and agreeing to host the national campaign in Katsina, describing the move as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability and citizens’ welfare.
He revealed that preparations were already in full swing to ensure a successful outing, adding that the governor’s support would help amplify climate awareness and encourage community-driven solutions to environmental challenges.
The REHCCAT campaign is expected to serve as a platform for mobilising grassroots participation in climate action while promoting policies and practices that support sustainable development and environmental protection across the country.
With Katsina preparing to host the event, stakeholders believe the campaign will further strengthen public understanding of climate change and inspire collective action toward building more resilient communities.
