…Governor celebrates historic U-17 Women’s World Cup triumph, inspires Katsina girls

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, following their historic victory at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, describing their triumph as a moment of immense pride for Nigeria and the African continent.

The Flamingos clinched the coveted trophy after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final played in Rabat, Morocco, becoming the first African team to win the competition at that level.

Governor Radda said the young Nigerian footballers had not only won a prestigious international trophy but had also written their names in history by demonstrating courage, determination and an unbreakable fighting spirit.

In a congratulatory message issued on Sunday, November 8, 2026, the Governor praised the team’s remarkable comeback, noting that their ability to recover from an opening-match defeat and fight their way to the championship reflected the true Nigerian spirit.

“These girls came from behind and shocked the world. They lost their first match, dusted themselves off, and kept marching until they carried the cup home. That is the Nigerian spirit — we do not give up,” Radda said.

The Governor particularly commended the team’s technical crew, led by Coach Akeem Busari, for their tactical discipline, commitment and effective leadership throughout the tournament.

He also applauded Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku, whose decisive goals secured Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Japan in the final.

According to him, the achievement goes beyond football, as it represents a powerful message of hope, determination and limitless possibilities for young Nigerian girls who aspire to excel in sports and other fields of endeavour.

Radda noted that the Flamingos’ historic accomplishment would inspire thousands of aspiring female footballers in Katsina State and across the country to pursue their dreams with confidence, regardless of the challenges they may encounter.

He added that the victory had further strengthened Nigeria’s reputation as a country blessed with exceptional sporting talents capable of competing and triumphing on the global stage.

The Governor wished the players, coaching crew and officials a safe journey back home, urging Nigerians to give the champions a befitting reception in recognition of their outstanding achievement.

He described the Flamingos’ triumph as a defining moment for Nigerian women’s football and a source of national pride, saying the young champions had given the country another reason to celebrate its resilience and sporting excellence.
